This is a great opportunity for those of you that love to trail ride and would like to try a fun competition on add to your riding enjoyment. If you have read or heard about the Mountain Trail Competition, and have not had the chance to get your feet wet, this is a wonderful opportunity for you and your horse/mule. If you have tried this, here's another chance to hone your skills.

The mountain trail horse/mule is judged on their ability to handle natural and/or man-made obstacles that may be encountered on a mountain trail ride. Each horse and rider team will be scored on each obstacle that reflects obstacles or tasks that may be required to maneuver on the trail. The tasks/obstacles are used to showcase the horse and riders ability to perform maneuvers. These may include open/close a gate, pull/drag a log, backing or side-passing, log walkovers, backpackers, critters and others that may be encountered on a ride in the mountains.

Judging will be on a scale of 0-10 on each obstacle or task. The trail horse should travel over and around obstacles, exhibiting confidence and purpose. The horse should perform with the confidence and ability to handle himself and to take care of his rider, to be aware of his surroundings, without losing focus, while negotiating the obstacles or tasks.

Clothing: Dress as you would for a trail ride with a neat and clean appearance. A clean working outfit is preferred. Heeled boots or riding shoes are required. Helmets are required for those riders 18 and under.

Tack: Use the equipment you would use on a trail ride. Riding with two hands is permitted if using a Snaffle Bit or Bosal, regardless of the horse's age. Use one hand with a Shank Bit,  you can use two hands, but you will receive a penalty.
